The match was settled by a brilliant strike in the first half.
The English pushed out for an equaliser, but Spain successfully negotiated an extraordinary 13 minutes of stoppage time to seal their first major title in front of a sellout crowd of 75,784.
Alba Redondo had Spain’s best opening in the chaotic start but her shot was well saved before Hemp had another chance to open the scoring. Spain almost doubled their lead with the final act of the first half, but Salma Paralluelo’s first-time strike hit the outside of the post. Kelly then showed her attacking threat with a brilliant cross, but Hemp’s first-time strike went just wide.
