While plenty of eyes have turned to the Nevada desert, they shouldn't overlook the role Miami has to play in F1’s growth, LukeSmithF1 writes. Formula One’s return to Miami this weekend will do more than kickstart a big year for the sport in the U.S.

When it came to the actual action on the track, last year’s Miami race was far from a classic. In many ways, it summed up the 2022 season: Charles Leclerc started well and led the opening quarter, only to be overtaken by Max Verstappen, who then controlled proceedings to the finish. The weekend also left drivers seeking a number of improvements to the circuit, primarily the asphalt they raced upon.

There were also some concerns about the layout of the Turn 14-15 chicane that slows the track down beneath the flyover of the Florida turnpike. Lewis Hamilton said the only part of the track he would change was the chicane, which Daniel Ricciardo described as being “a little too Mickey Mouse” because of how slow and narrow it was for the cars to get through.

“We hope to provide the kind of experience that will hopefully turn around all of our doubters from past years,” he said.Miami has a 10-year contract in place with F1, ensuring it will remain on the calendar until 2031.

The organizers of all three races are happy to exchange learnings and help each other run even better events year after year, and ensure the US fan interest is sustained. A delegation from Las Vegas will be in Miami this weekend to help their preparations for November.
