Sparta over Hillside - Football - North Jersey, Section 1, Group 3 first round
Shane Hoover’s 13-yard screen pass to Lucas Brown for a touchdown with 57 seconds left proved to be the game winner as seventh-seeded Sparta rallied from 12 points down to defeat second-seeded Hillside, 27-26, in the first round of the North Jersey, Section 1, Group 3 tournament in Hillside.
It was the second time Hoover found Brown for a touchdown for Sparta . The tandem connected for a 5-yard score with 5:12 left in the third quarter, which trimmed the deficit to 26-21.Hoover ran for a 3-yard TD run that cut the Hillside lead to 19-14 heading into halftime. But Zion Risher opened the second half with a 50-yard TD pass to Al-Jamir Davis that once again made it a two-possession game.
Jon Calderon added a rushing touchdown Sparta plays sixth-seeded Montville in the semifinals next week. Talibi Kaba’s 7-yard touchdown run opened the scoring and gave Hillside a lead it held for nearly the entire game.
