Q: Speed cameras sound great, but an important question is if they will catch the vehicle and not the driver. How will that be managed?A: Tickets will be mailed to the owner of the car caught speeding. In other places that use speed cameras, some drivers have gotten off because they claimed they were not the speeding driver.
“Over the past year in San Jose, we’ve seen an alarming rise in traffic fatalities – with speeding often the cause. The staggering loss of life we see on our streets is a preventable tragedy,” said San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo. He describes the proposed law as “a common-sense bill to allow cities like ours to deploy speed safety cameras to save lives and keep our streets safe.”
Cameras can only take pictures of the license plate, and the pictures have to be destroyed 60 days after the final disposition of the violation. Q: If traffic cameras are installed near schools, will they be programmed to trigger based on the posted speed limit, or the school zone speed limit of 25 mph?A: They’ll be placed ahead of school zones and programmed for the posted speed limit approaching the school zone.
