Editorial: Given the scale of the task it would be easy to be overwhelmed but as Transport Minister Andrew Constance told the Herald, speed is of the essence.

Rain is finally falling on Sydney and many of the areas devastated by bushfires over the past three months.

The task is enormous. More than 2000 homes have been destroyed, about 1600 in NSW, and as many as 14,000 insurance claims have been lodged. It will take time to woo tourists back. Australia launched a major tourism advertising campaign to attract visitors from Britain, which had to be pulled because its happy images were belied by what the world saw on their television sets and social media feeds. The bushfires have also affected farming communities in some of Australia’s most productive areas and of course the forestry industry.

NSW may have to reconsider plans to sell its plantations, which have lost mature trees worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
