Spring Branch ISD board to have sole control over book ban process, removing parents, teachers, librarians

"The Breakaways," a children's graphic novel about a group of 8th graders who play soccer together and features a transgender character, was banned from Spring Branch ISD elementary school libraries after the district said a committee reviewed the material and found that it was “not age appropriate." Cathy G. Johnson, author of the book, said that the target age range for readers is 8 to 14.

Spring Branch ISD’s Summer Reading Challenge is underway. Students from pre-K through 12th grade are invited to participate to have the opportunity to win prizes and be better prepared to start school in the fall.“We’re hemorrhaging teachers, we’re hemorrhaging funding we need to focus on those things in order to have a successful school district and they want to talk about politics," she said.

Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Blaine said district administrators asked the board for assistance on the reviews during a discussion following a closed session. Some parents opposed to certain books used their two-minutes before the board to read excerpts they deemed inappropriate for school children.
