It’s the signature color that so many are used to and have associated with Sprite for so long but after more than 60 years, the iconic soda brand is ditching the green.
According to, beginning Aug. 1, Sprite packaging will change from green to clear plastic as part of broader efforts to become more environmentally responsible, the beverage giant said Wednesday.
Why the change? Sprite’s current plastic contains green polyethylene terephthalate , an addictive that can’t be recycled into new bottles, a key initiative for the company as it aspires to reduce plastic waste.
But the well-known green color won’t completely be scrapped as it’ll still be used on the Sprite labels. Other beverages in Coca-Cola’s portfolio that use a green hue -- including Fresca, Seagram’s and Mello Yello -- will also soon ditch their bottle color for a clear alternative in the coming months.
The change might have been prompted by criticism Coca-Cola has received for contributing to environmentally damaging plastic waste. In 2020, the company was named as the world’s No. 1 plastic polluter by the environmental firm
