NEW ORLEANS — The Spurs’ season ended in a fashion that was disappointing but perhaps expected Wednesday, falling to the Pelicans in a Western Conference play-in game 113-103 at the Smoothie King Center.The NBA’s all-time winningest coach, Popovich declined to answer the question of whether he planned to return for a 27th season on the Spurs’ bench.
The Pelicans’ best players came up big Wednesday. The Spurs’ top dogs were lost until the second half. After opening the game with eight consecutive missed shots, Johnson’s first successful attempt came on a drive against Jaxson Hayes with 3:56 remaining in the third quarter. That cut the Spurs’ deficit to 85-66.
The Pelicans were also active on defense, keeping the Spurs from their preferred spots on offense and holding them to 40.7 percent shooting. It is possible this playoff-like moment was still too much for the young Spurs. Afterward, Popovich noted they looked more like the unsure version of themselves from the opening months of the season, rather than the more confident bunch that made a play-in push in March.3.
