Sri Lanka achieved a historic whitewash over Australia in a one-day international series, securing a resounding 174-run victory at Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Chasing a formidable target of 282, Australia succumbed to a humiliating collapse, being bowled out for a meager 107 in 24.2 overs on Friday. This defeat marked the first time Australia has lost all matches in a nine-one-day series against Sri Lanka .
The hosts' previous record victory against Australia in this format was an 82-run triumph at the same venue in 2016. While Australia avoided their lowest ever ODI score against Sri Lanka, which stands at 74 achieved at the Gabba in 2013, their 107 was undeniably their lowest score in Sri Lanka, surpassing the 124 they managed at the SSC Ground in Colombo back in 1983. This Australian innings began with a promising 14 runs from the first over, powered by Travis Head's (18) three boundaries off Asitha Fernando. However, Fernando mounted a strong comeback, finishing with impressive figures of 3-23. Wanindu Hasaranga also contributed significantly with 3-23, and Dunith Wellalage claimed 4-35. Acting captain Steve Smith was the lone standout for Australia, top-scoring with 29 runs. In a disastrous display, Australia lost their last seven wickets for a mere 28 runs. Sri Lanka set the stage for victory with their second consecutive century partnership in the series. Kusal Mendis anchored the innings with a masterful 101 runs from 115 balls, propelling his side to 4-281 from their allotted 50 overs. Mendis's ton followed captain Charith Asalanka's impressive 127 from 126 balls on Wednesday, which led to a 49-run victory. Asalanka continued his dominance in this match, remaining unbeaten on 78 runs from 66 balls as Sri Lanka finished their innings with a flourish. Australia made five changes from their first loss at the same ground, bringing back Travis Head and Glenn Maxwell to bolster a depleted team. Head was rested for the first match, while Maxwell was ailing. Marnus Labuschagne and Cooper Connelly were dropped, and top-scorer Alex Carey from the first match was replaced by fellow wicketkeeper Josh Inglis, who missed the first game due to back spasms suffered during the second Test. Left-arm paceman Ben Dwarshuis and legspinner Tanveer Sangha came in for Spencer Johnson and Nathan Ellis. After losing Pathum Nissanka early, Nishan Madushka (51 from 70 balls) forged a strong partnership with Kusal Mendis, amassing 98 runs together. Australia deployed seven bowlers, including four spinners – Adam Zampa, Maxwell, Sangha, and Matt Short – but only Zampa managed to claim a wicket. Dwarshuis, competing with fellow left-armer Johnson for the Champions Trophy spot left vacant by Mitchell Starc, dismissed Madushka, thanks to a juggling catch on the boundary by Zampa. Kamindu Mendis managed only four runs from eight balls before chopping a slower delivery from Sean Abbott into his stumps.
