Leaders of Sri Lanka's protest movement say they will occupy the residences of the President and Prime Minister until the political leaders finally quit office.
Opposition party members met on Sunday for talks on the formation of a new government.
Another opposition politician, MA Sumanthiran, said earlier that all opposition parties combined could easily muster the 113 members needed to show a majority in parliament, at which point they would request Mr Rajapaksa to install the new government and then resign. Parliament Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena said on Saturday that Rajapaksa's decision to step down was taken "to ensure a peaceful handover of power".
Members of the security forces, some with assault rifles, stood outside the compound but did not stop people from going in. Furniture and artefacts could be seen smashed, and some took the opportunity to frolic in its swimming pool.Protesters had also travelled to the prime minister's official residence and later in the evening set fire to the private home of Mr Wickremesinghe.
