A St. John man is accused of downloading and sharing four videos of child pornography from his Snapchat account, according to court records.
Shane William Avery, 20, is charged with four counts of possession of child pornography, a Level 6 felony.On May 22, Indiana State Police detectives were alerted to the case via a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, according to the probable cause affidavit. Snapchat contacted the NCMEC after it discovered four videos depicting child sexual abuse passing through its platform on April 15. The Snapchat account was linked to an IP address in St.
On Aug. 7, police visited Avery’s address, where he lived with his mother. Initially, no one answered the door at the home, but Avery’s mother verified his phone number, court records state. She said he wasn’t home, but three minutes later she exited the residence with Avery.Police talked to Avery, who agreed to answer questions. He admitted to downloading the videos, but later claimed that he deleted them, saying, “I felt sick afterwards,” the affidavit states.
He said he sent the video to a second account he had on the platform because, “I don’t know. I just did it, see what happens, cause I’m stupid.” Detectives searched Avery’s room at his house and verified that the background in the video did not match his residence, records state. Avery was arrested and taken to the Lake County Jail. Court records don’t indicate what his bail amount was, but it does state that it was previously posted.
