The Crusaders, who trailed 40-30 at the half, kept battling back, getting to within five points in the fourth but St. Joseph always maintained a cushion.
Guardian captain Jordyn Reding led all scorers with 36 points. Reding, along with fellow captain Tatum Sparks, were the only two returnees from last year’s city championship winning team. The Crusader scoring leader was Taylor Randall with 22 points, including four three-pointers.Article content “I really like the energy we came out with,” noted Crusader head coach Josh Rutten. “Our guys were playing hard. We know they’ve got some talented players on their team so we want to try to limit them. And I thought we did a really good job closing out and contesting their shots early. They kind of let us get up that early lead, which was really nice.”
The top three Saskatoon boys and girls Premiere Division teams each advance to the Hoopla provincial championships, so the third place games were crucial in each league, also played on Saturday. Advancing to Hoopla were the St. Joseph boys with a 96-88 win over Bethlehem and on the girls side, Centennial nipped Walter Murray 65-59 to claim the final spot. Hoopla will be held in Prince Albert from March 23 to 25.
