LIFE WITHOUT PAROLE: Robert Findlay Smith, 71, pleaded guilty to capital murder and was sentenced to life without parole Tuesday in the shooting deaths of three people at an Alabama church potluck supper at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Vestavia Hills:

District Attorney Danny Carr and Chief Deputy District Attorney Joe Roberts prosecuted the case. Smith was represented by attorneys Emory Anthony and Moses Stone.

“It was such a senseless, evil act of murder where three people were shot,’' she said. “This, after earlier, had offered the hand of friendship and to sit at our table and dine with us.”“Our grandson commented, ‘A single senseless act of evil has been drowned out and lost among hundreds of acts of kindness and love,’ she said. “This is the legacy left by the victims. Contrast that with the legacy of Robert Smith.”Anthony issued an apology in court on behalf of Smith.

Anthony said he can’t say why Smith opened fire that night. The prosecutor’s office also said they don’t know a motive.Jane Pounds, left, Bart Rainey, center and Sarah Sharon Yeager, right.
