Responses to the spate of knife crime in NSW should heed community needs and successful policies overseas, youth justice experts say.
They caution against reactionary policies following attacks at Bondi Junction and Wakeley and, in the past week, the stabbing deaths ofAssault and robbery offences involving a knife are dominating headlines, but data from the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research show such incidents are at a 20-year low: about 1500 were recorded in 2023, compared to more than 4200 in 2004.
”The Bondi attack was very high-profile but not youth-focused, the church attack was allegedly terrorism-related,” she said. Having spoken with young people in custody, Robinson said the most common reason given for carrying a knife was feeling unsafe and wanting to protect themselves and friends. Mallett agreed the path leading to young people carrying knives involved social issues that contributed to disenfranchisement, notably poor mental health and role modelling.
For Robinson, these steps overlook the factors in the community that lead young people to carry knives. This could involve mental health initiatives, as well as education programs, such as bringing doctors to schools to describe what it is like to treat someone who has been stabbed.
