Felling was due to begin this morning

The "stand-off" between Wellingborough residents and North Northamptonshire Council continued today, February 20, over the planned removal of 45 trees on the town's iconic London Road. Up to 100 people prevented contractors from setting up fencing around the area and argued the "lack of legal basis" in felling the 80-100-year-old trees, which was due to begin this morning.

The news that potentially 61 trees between the roundabout and the Dog and Duck Pub was broken by Marion last Tuesday, February 14. The Independent councillor for Isebrook told NorthantsLive: "The Walks are really important to local residents. For me it's heartbreaking, they are so beautiful." Today, when felling was due to begin, at least 100 people occupied a footbath to block contractors from leaving Embankment Car Park and setting up the traffic lights and barriers necessary to begin cutting down trees. Northamptonshire Police were also in attendance, attempting to liaise between the council and protestors.

Wellingborough Town Council released a statement on Sunday calling the felling "unlawful". It said whilst planning permission was granted to Bovis Homes, further applications are required to specify which trees are to be removed and why, and that this detail has not been provided through a planning application.
