“I don’t think anyone on our team has forgotten about that.”
Texas put a damper on Stanford’s 2021 NCAA title celebration. Now the Longhorns are trying to keep the Cardinal from having a national championship to celebrate in 2022.
That 61-56 loss was just the second game of the season for Stanford, back when the Cardinal was still getting used to playing without graduated point guard Kiana Williams. The Longhorns took full advantage by pressing the Cardinal full court, forcing 20 turnovers and holding Stanford to its lowest point total of the season.“I don’t think it’s any secret that Texas likes to play very aggressive, kind of up on you,” coach Tara VanDerveer said.
“You’ve got to have guard play,” VanDerveer said. “So we frontloaded our schedule with really tough competition and threw our guards into the deep end of the pool. They got dunked a little bit, but they came up swimming and they’re doing really well.”
