An international superstar cyclist decided to withdraw from the world championship race in New South Wales after he was charged with allegedly assaulting two teenagers pranking him at his hotel on Saturday night.

Dutch rider Mathieu van der Poel allegedly confronted two girls aged 13 and 14 on Saturday night about 10:40pm - on the eve of the World World Championships in Wollongong - when they repeatedly knocked on the door of his room.

Hotel staff called the police after the scuffle, which led to the athlete being taken to Kogarah Police Station and charged with two counts of common assault. The Dutch cyclist was on minimal sleep and revealed he did not return to the hotel room from the police station until about 4am on Sunday, which ruined his preparation.
