Nog and Wesley have more in common than you think.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The failed Starfleet career of Wesley Crusher was perfectly flipped by Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and the story of prospective Ferengi officer Nog . DS9 took the Ferengi from failed Star Trek: The Next Generation villains and turned them into a fully realized and nuanced society. At the core of DS9's Ferengi rehabilitation was Quark , his brother Rom , and Rom's son Nog.
DS9's Nog Was Not Starfleet Material - Which Is What Made Him Great When audiences first meet Nog in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's pilot, he's looting one of the abandoned stores on the Promenade. This is far from the introduction that many would expect for a character that would go on to become an exemplary Starfleet officer.
For example, in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 3, episode 14, "Heart of Stone", even Commander Benjamin Sisko is still suspicious about Nog's intentions. However, Nog's emotional story about his father's dashed ambitions finally convinced Sisko that the young Ferengi was the real deal, and promptly agreed to support his Starfleet Academy application. Nog would become an excellent Starfleet officer, and diversified the Academy further.
Picard's guilt over the death of Wesley's father clearly played a part in the ease of access that the young Crusher enjoyed. However, as a wunderkind, Wesley was being set up for the glittering Starfleet career that had been enjoyed by his father Jack. The weight of expectation eventually became too much for Wesley to bear, especially following some serious challenges such as the Nova Squadron tragedy.
