Mon Mothma actor Genevieve O’Reilly explains how the Empire vs Rebellion dynamic is different in Andor compared to other Star Wars projects: 'We have a very, a burgeoning whisper of rebellion in this, but they are not connected in any way.'

Andor actor Genevieve O'Reilly explains how the dynamic between the Empire and the Rebellion is different in the upcoming prequel to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Released in 2016, Rogue One introduced audiences to Cassian Andor , Jyn Erso, and their team of other members of the Rebellion as they attempt to steal the plans for the Empire's newly-created Death Star. Rogue One was a hit with audiences and critics, and was a major box office success, earning over $1.058 billion.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Andor takes place 5 years before the events of Rogue One, chronicling the events of Cassian's life before he became a hero of the Rebellion. In addition to Luna, the show is also set to feature the return of O'Reilly as Mon Mothma and Forest Whitaker as Saw Gerrara. A trailer for Andor has already teased a very different kind of Star Wars show, with much more grittiness and a tangible, real-life feel to the world.

"And that's the world we're in investing in with Andor, this spy thriller corner of the Star Wars world. But at the time we meet them is a time I don't think we've really discovered much or wrestled with much within the timeline of Star Wars. And that is where there is not quite a rebellion yet. We're so used to having the empire versus rebellion. We have a very, a burgeoning whisper of rebellion in this, but they are not connected in any way. There is no central force.

Rogue One features a very clear differentiation between the Rebellion and the Empire, and the ongoing war between the two is well established. However, Andor seems to be exploring the very inception of the Rebellion itself. When audiences first meet Luna's Andor in Rogue One, he guns down an innocent man without a second thought in the name of protecting the Rebellion.

With most Star Wars movies and shows dealing with very clearly defined "good" vs "evil" dynamics, Andor has an opportunity to be very different from the Star Wars content currently streaming on Disney+. It remains to be seen exactly how the show will explore the gray areas that O'Reilly alludes to, but it's likely that audiences will learn more about what drives Andor and what events shaped his outlook on the Empire.
