The closures are all due to higher rates of crime in the neighborhoods where the stores have been open for years.
“Today, we find ourselves in a position where we must modernize and transform the Starbucks experience in our stores and recreate an environment that is relevant, welcoming and safe, and where we uplift one another with dignity, respect and kindness. We need to reinvent Starbucks for the future. And to be successful, it will take our collective courage to begin again.”
Starbucks told KIRO 7 that it is closing stores in the Central District, Capitol Hill, Roosevelt, Westlake Center and Union Station.Starbucks also told KIRO 7 that this is part of the company’s efforts to renew its commitment to kindness and to being welcoming. KIRO 7 also learned that Starbucks store managers will decide if bathrooms will be open to anyone as all stores are expected to be redesigned with safety in mind.
