The most detailed account of Keir Starmer’s private dinner with Donald Trump in New York in September appeared in an article by Tim Shipman in the Sunday Times at the weekend. Here is an extract. Twice during Sir Keir Starmer’s first dinner with Donald Trump at the end of September, the former president turned to the prime minister and said: “You’re a liberal, so we won’t always agree but we can work together.” At the end of the meal, he looked at Starmer and said: “You and I are friends.
” Starmer’s team breathed a sigh of relief. With America set to choose a new commander-in-chief, personal relationships could define the future of the transatlantic alliance. An even bigger hit with Trump than the buttoned-up Starmer, however, was David Lammy, the foreign secretary.
