We need to see university not simply as a rite of passage, but as a clear-headed deal with students about their future
What is less discussed is the variable value of degrees. When Sunak said this summer that he wanted to cap courses that do not have a steady proportion of graduates getting a professional job, furthering study or starting a business, he was accused of demoralising students from less traditional academic backgrounds. But he was right to highlight that while universities are places of learning, they are also ripe for opportunity and advancement.
What they should not be doing is taking high tuition fees to provide a poor service which leaves their graduates floundering to match their degree to a solid living wage. For his part, Starmer has been remarkably quiet in sharing his thinking on universities, not least because he has retreated from the miscalculated Corbyn-era plan to, which was a silly pledge when it was made by Nick Clegg for the Lib Dems. There is no revenue model for the mix of universities the UK enjoys without fees, and to remain competitive, more money needs to flow into the sector one way or the other to keep it competitive globally.
We are rightly concerned about the social mix of universities in a way which is valuable. For all the many strengths of the US elite college system, it features shockingly low rates of social mobility in the Ivy League. regarding elite colleges shows how much the system skews towards students whose parents donate high sums or who profit from nepotistic alumni schemes. But we have our own gaps to worry about. One is the need for politicians to stop dishing out magic-money pledges that would simply starve universities of resources – or make them rely on donors to an unhealthy extent.
