Rishi Sunak appears to be safe from a leadership challenge after the Conservatives won the Tees Valley mayoral election despite heavy losses elsewhere

The BBC’s projected national share – an estimate of what the result would have been if the whole of Great Britain had voted – showed Labour on 34 per cent and the Conservatives on 25 per cent with the Liberal Democrats, who gained at least 60 councillors, third with 17 per cent. But some party grandees warned there was still deep dissatisfaction with Mr Sunak with one MP saying that the Prime Minister is “very lucky Boris is not in Parliament”.
