I spent my first week at NPR's headquarters in Washington, D.C., where I'd have a schedule packed with introductions, trainings and promo tapings. And I felt a little intimidated about meeting new people.
So I called up my old friend and colleague Erika Romero for support. She and I used to work together at American Public Media. We would pop over to each other's desks for pep talks and have dance breaks in the kitchen. She also said I shouldn't be afraid to share my skills and talents. She reminded me of a time she'd been impressed by me. We went out to dinner with her husband and he shared something personal that he hadn't told most people.
