“From a young age, I thought that all ‘real men’ were meant to look like professional wrestlers and that resembling anything less than a Greek god was a disappointment,” writes LucasOakeley.

. Anorexia, to be precise. That is not an easy thing for me to admit and – despite the fact I’ve got a healthy relationship with food and my body today – it is something that I’m still gravely ashamed of. Largely because I’m a man, and that’s not what men do.

From a young age, I thought that all “real men” were meant to look like professional wrestlers and that resembling anything less than a Greek god was a disappointment. Most of the eating disorders you’ll find in men tend to err towards that obsession with fitness. One in 40 people has what is known aswith that skewed image of one’s appearance affecting both men and women pretty much equally.

At the same time, food was all I could think about every hour of every day, and it made me utterly, utterly miserable. As well as a fixation with starving yourself to death, incessant thoughts and compulsive behaviour are a big part of being an anorexic. I’d adopted bizarre daily rituals where I’d reward myself with a single Jaffa Cake after doing 1,000 sit-ups on my bedroom floor.
