State initiates ‘direct operational oversight’ of embattled N.J. city’s water utility

State and local leaders of towns that get their water from Trenton urged such a move last month.

Comment from TWW and Trenton Mayor Reed Gusciora was forthcoming Wednesday afternoon.

Lavenberg said TWW has been lead-compliant since 2019, the water is safe to drink and the agency continually works to make improvements. “We are being asked to correct nearly 50-year-old problems in four years, which included a global pandemic. Through all of that, we never once had an interruption in service.

The DEP draws its authority for the move from enforcing several safe drinking water acts, namely the New Jersey and federal Safe Drinking Water Acts, the order says.
