The countdown is on to kick off in the State of Origin series opener as both sides are trying to keep the nerves at bay.
There are four debutantes playing for the Maroons Wednesday night, including coach Billy Slater who is making his Origin coaching debut.
Slater is one of the best Maroons players when he was fullback for the team and says the game matters to him. “This team has been important to me since I was a four-year-old boy, ever since I can remember,” he said. “I got the opportunity to be one of the players who wore the jersey and inspire other people, and now I get the opportunity to help our group be those players to inspire our state.”
