State opposition gains Prahran seat from Greens in tight by-election race

The Liberal Party's Rachel Westaway is set to win the Prahran by-election, beating out the Greens .The Liberal Party is set to claim victory in the Prahran by-election, with candidate Rachel Westaway taking the seat vacated by Greens MP Sam Hibbins , ABC's chief elections analyst Antony Green has projected.

Ms Westaway currently leads with 51.6 per cent of the two-candidate-preferred vote, leading the Greens' Angelica Di Camillo by 954 votes with all polling day, pre-poll and returned postal votes counted.The Greens won the polling day vote but the Liberal Party recorded a majority with pre-poll votes and won nearly two-thirds of the postal vote, with just a few thousand postal votes yet to return.

"I remember Prahran with what it once was like, and that was the Beverly Hills of Melbourne. It was iconic," Ms Westaway told the ABC during her campaign. "Everybody wanted to come to Chapel Street, which runs right through the electorate, but we've seen a demise in the seat.In the Werribee by-election, the result remains too close to call after Labor suffered a double-digit swing against it — but both major parties finished the night with less than 30 per cent of the primary vote.

Labor recorded a majority of the polling day vote, but with more than half of all votes cast as pre-poll votes, the result remains in doubt.Both by-elections are tipped to serve as a litmus test for both the state and federal Labor governments, as well as the electoral prospects of the Liberal Party, which has been out of power in Victoria since 2014.
