Washington’s season opener Sunday is against a potential successor to the crown of the NFL’s most dysfunctional franchise: the Arizona Cardinals.
But this week, Washington Coach Ron Rivera has done his best to pump up the Cardinals. He complimented their rushing attack, “dynamic receivers,” “solid tight ends” and “a big, stout offensive line.” He pointed out they have playmakers on defense, including safety Budda Baker, whom Rivera believes “is one of the elite safeties in this league.”
Notably, he did not mention quarterback Josh Dobbs, whom Arizona traded for on Aug. 24, or fifth-round draft pick Clayton Tune. Arizona hasn’t announced a starting quarterback, but it seems likely to be Dobbs.Inpredictable, a sports betting analysis website, projects the Cardinals to finish with 4.8 wins. That’s more than a full win less than the team predicted to have the second-fewest wins , and the chasm is more than double the gap between the two teams projected to have the most wins .
“Openers are always full of the unknown, and so there’ll be some un-scouted looks,” Commanders defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio said. “We’ll play fast to it; we’ll correct it on the sideline and move on.”
