Happening today: Statue of Liberty's crown reopens to public after two-year pause. JohnBDias has the details.
-- The Statue of Liberty fully reopens to visitors Tuesday after more than two years of limited access. But as CBS2's John Dias reports, if you're looking to get up there right away, don't count on it. Tickets are booked through the month of October.
According to the National Park Service's latest numbers, 4.5 million people visited the park in 2016. There are 354 steps inside the statue from the pedestal to the crown. Once all the way up there, there is a 25 window view of New York Harbor. But it gets tight in the crown, so it hasn't been COVID-friendly. Now, with the easing of restrictions and cases continuing to decrease, the city feels it's safe to reopen.
On social media, NYC's official guide encourages people not to wait until the last minute to book their trip. One person commented,"Lady Liberty it's time to shine once again and show the ' world' you still stand proud and our beacon of light."
