.RepStenyHoyer endorsed Angela Alsobrooks for the Maryland Senate race, offering the Prince George’s County executive a boost from a prominent member of the party in what is expected to be a competitive primary to replace the retiring SenatorCardin.
The Maryland Democrat and former House majority leader praised Alsobrooks for her work in local government, calling her a"worthy successor” to Cardin in 2024. The endorsement gives Alsobrooks a key advantage as she faces a crowded field of competitors that is only expected to grow larger over the coming months."Angela had to confront many of the challenges facing our country at a young age.
Alsobrooks launched her Senate bid for the solidly Democratic seat in early May, where she will face at least two challengers: Rep. David Trone and Montgomery County Councilman Will Jawando. Alsobrooks could also face a challenge from Rep. Jamie Raskin , who has not yet indicated whether he plans to run for the seat.
Should Raskin enter the race, he would benefit from the name recognition he earned as the manager for former President Donald Trump’s second impeachment in 2021 and his role on the Jan. 6 committee in the last Congress. Raskin said last month he would likely make a decision sometime in June.A Senate bid for Raskin would also position him for a rematch against Trone. Raskin previously defeated him in the Democratic primary for his current House seat in 2016.
Meanwhile, the bench for competitive Republican Senate candidates is short in the heavily blue state. GOP leaders sought to convince former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan to run for the seat, but he ruled out a bid last month.
