Stephen Gageler has been appointed as the High Court's 14th Chief Justice, replacing Susan Kiefel who is stepping down after six years in the role.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus announced the appointment on Tuesday, as they confirmed Justice Gageler will begin his new duties on November 6.
Justice Gageler is currently the most senior judge on the High Court, having served on the bench since 2012. Her ascension was historic as it marked the first time in the High Court's history where the it was majority female - comprising four women and three men. The government"extensively" consulted with state and territory Attorneys-General, the shadow attorney-general, the heads of the Federal Courts and state and territory Supreme Courts, state and territory Bar associations and law societies, National Legal Aid, Australian Women Lawyers, the National Association of Community Legal Centres and deans of law schools across the country ahead of the latest appointments.
They also offered thanks to outgoing Chief Justice Kiefel, praising her"exceptional service" in the role since 2017, as well as her previous work on the Court as a Justice from 2007 and stints on the Federal Court of Australia, Supreme Court of Queensland and Supreme Court of Norfolk Island.
