It's been over 50 years since a female Parafencer has represented Australia at the Paralympics — Stephenie Rodriguez is hoping to change this.
Stephenie Rodriguez is attempting to win a wildcard entry to the Paris Paralympics for Parafencing. Stephenie Rodriguez only started competing in Parafencing a year ago – now she's on the cusp of a Paralympic debut.
Initially, when Rodriguez's coach suggested she try and qualify for Paris, the Sydneysider only saw a mountain to climb."I don't have six to 12 years in the sport to self-actualise, as some of the young fencers do," Rodriguez said. To be considered for a wildcard, fencers must compete at eligible competitions and show improvement, before being put forward by their national federation.
"I think it's more difficult than regular fencing," NSW Fencing vice president Duncan Fairweather said.Rodriguez competes in sabre and epee and will find out in June whether she has won a wildcard to the Games. Rodriguez is keen to see the next generation emerge through the program, with the aim to develop an impressive squad for Brisbane in 2032.
