Steve Smith has joined some of world cricket’s greatest batsmen in the 10,000-run club with his first run on Australia’s tour of Sri Lanka. The 35-year-old fell an agonising one run short of reaching the milestone on his home wicket at the SCG in the team’s win over India earlier this month.
Steve Smith becomes fourth Australian to reach 10,000 Test runs. But it was no less meaningful when he finally cracked five figures as Australia’s stand-in captain in Galle on Wednesday. The Aussies were in a solid position when Smith arrived at the crease, with all eyes quickly fixed on the milestone man. Smith raised his bat as he received a standing ovation from home fans, the hardy crew of touring supporters and the Australian squad in the stands.
