Director Steven Spielberg criticizes Warner Bros. for its shift in release strategy amid the coronavirus pandemic, which he feels has been neglecting their filmmakers.

Steven Spielberg criticizes Warner Bros. Discovery and its recent trend of sending movies straight to streaming at the expense of their filmmakers. As demonstrated through his new film, The Fabelmans, Spielberg is a strong supporter of the art of filmmaking and the magic of cinema. The Fabelmans is a semi-autobiographical take on Spielberg's own childhood, tracking his early brushes with making movies.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY While promoting The Fabelmans, Spielberg finds time to reflect on the recent changes to moviegoing. It's in an interview with The New York Times where the director particularly takes aim at Warner Bros. Discovery, which famously made the decision to have day-and-date releases for all of their 2021 movies, having them debut on HBO Max the same day the films hit theaters. The studio has also granted certain movies exclusive streaming releases.

The pandemic created an opportunity for streaming platforms to raise their subscriptions to record-breaking levels and also throw some of my best filmmaker friends under the bus as their movies were unceremoniously not given theatrical releases. They were paid off and the films were suddenly relegated to, in this case, HBO Max. The case I’m talking about. And then everything started to change. How Warner Bros.

The obvious way for Warner Bros. Discovery to redeem themselves is to right all of their wrongs. In some ways, this has already begun. The day-and-date HBO Max releases were kept to 2021 only, as promised, and the studio has committed to its theatrical releases this year. However, there is a shorter gap between the theatrical debut and a movie's streaming release, which has raised some eyebrows. Another mistake Warner Bros. will need to fix is not being transparent with their talent.

Steven Spielberg is not alone in his opinions on this, as The Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan and Dune director Denis Villeneuve have both been vocal about their qualms with skipping theatrical releases. It would make more sense if streaming services strong-armed an up-and-coming director with a tactic like this; however, they pulled this on some esteemed directors. It will be interesting to see how Warner Bros.
