Award-winning journalist Jill Stewart joins the Los Angeles Daily News as city editor this week, Southern California News Group announced Monday. Stewart will oversee local news coverage for the Daily News.
A longtime Southern California journalist, Stewart earned a Master’s degree in journalism from Stanford University. Stewart was formerly managing editor of L.A. Weekly. She’s also served as a reporter for the Los Angeles Times, Buzz and New Times Los Angeles, where she focused on urban affairs, education and the environment.
Stewart also wrote a popular column on California politics, wrote freelance articles for various websites and publications, including FairWarning.org, and has edited a variety of books on contemporary topics, including education and politics. In addition to her work in journalism, Stewart served as executive director of the Coalition to Preserve LA and oversaw the campaign for Measure S, which would have reshaped Los Angeles’ process for approving higher-density housing projects. Voters defeated the initiative in 2017.
