A noticeable amount of tar balls, sticky black blobs of oil, are washing up on Texas beaches.

“There have been no reported injuries, health hazards or impacts to wildlife,” an official with the office told the TV station. “The Texas General Land Office Oil Spill Program has increased summer beach patrols coastwide and will be sampling beach tar to analyze and attempt to determine the tar’s origin.”

There’s been an uptick in tar ball sightings in recent weeks, something Brandon Hill, city of Galveston’s coastal resources manager,Hill told KPRC-TV that the amount of tar balls isn’t something to be worried about or that warrants a clean-up effort at this point. “This is a very light occurrence being closely monitored and is within what would be considered the natural occurrence levels for this sort of material,” he told the Houston TV station. “It isn’t an event that is impacting one area in particular. It’s more like a natural phenomenon inherent in the Gulf that is being observed in populated beaches, but is occurring over a wide area right now.

“Today the tar ball can be found on the feet of almost anyone who spends an afternoon on a Texas beach.”Those who encounter the tar balls can call the state oil spill reporting hotline at 800-832-8224.
