A guaranteed income program providing monthly payments of $1,000 for two years in Los Angeles County is accepting applications for a little less than a week.
The program, titled Breathe, will select 200 applicants who are former foster children to receive the payments over two years. The application period opened on June 20 and will close on July 3 at 11:59 p.m., according to the program's webpage. To be eligible for this program, applicants must be at least 21 years old and not turn 24 before Sept. 1.
Other requirements applicants need to meet include having a household income at or below 100% of the area median income for a single-person household or 120% of the area median income for a household of two or more people. They also must have been negatively affected by the coronavirus pandemic and may not be enrolled in another guaranteed income program. The University of Pennsylvania and other research partners will conduct a randomized control study to measure the outcomes of the program.
Last year, the same program selected 1,000 people to receive $1,000 every month for three years, and now, the program is adding 200 people who will receive the same amount every month for two years, a spokesperson for Los Angeles County told the Washington Examiner. The previous 1,000 recipients were randomly selected from a pool of eligible applicants.
An additional 2,000 applicants were randomly chosen to participate in the study as part of the control group. The control group does not receive the $1,000 payments every month but will be asked to complete the periodic surveys and interviews and will be compensated with a $30 gift card for every survey they take.
