A Former Liberal MP has hit back at a Labor minister over the government's proposed budget plan, saying it “pretends to help people” but will only drive up inflation.
Treasurer Jim Chalmers will reveal a range of measures under its $14.6 billion cost of living relief package in Tuesday's budget, including raising the cut off age for single parent payments to 14 and a likely increase to the JobSeeker rate.
“This will be a big spending budget that will pretend to be helping people but will be driving up inflation which actually hurts the most vulnerable people in our country and especially those people on low incomes,” he told Sky News Australia. “And also make sure that we clean up the mess we inherited from Jason, the Liberal Party the National Party.
“The first thing is that Patrick and his mates should stop lying about the trillion-dollar debt, more than half of it was inherited from the Rudd-Gillard government and every time we tried to do something about it, they opposed it,” he argued.

Labor’s five year housing fund plan is a ‘drop in the ocean’Former Liberal MP Nicolle Flint says Labor has announced an extra two billion into their housing fund but builder and consumer confidence is 'fragile' due to the fund being a “drop in the ocean” over the next five years. “Labor, very quietly this week, announced an extra two billion of funding on top of that so it hasn’t even passed parliament, it’s not even up and running and they’re already pouring more money into it,” Ms Flint told Sky News host Cory Bernardi. “There is a housing crisis at the moment as we’re all aware … we don’t have enough supply, where interest rates are going up, where consumer and also builder confidence is fragile, and so Labor are trying to sort of address this with their ten-billion-dollar fund, plus the extra two, to create thirty thousand houses, social and affordable, over five years. “So it’s a drop in the ocean.”
