The protestor wore an anti-Putin T-shirt and a face mask.
England were preparing for a free kick awarded to Lauren Hemp after a foul when play was interrupted. The pitch invader – whose shirt featured a mock-up of Russian President Vladimir Putin as Adolf Hitler with the caption ‘Stop Putler’ – was quickly tackled by security and led away before the match continued.
The BBC’s commentary team, Robyn Cowen and Rachel Brown-Finnis, said the protestor was ‘dealt with swiftly’, adding: ‘They know their rugby round this part of the world, and that was a pretty decent tackle.’ Less than five minutes after the pitch invasion took place, Spain scored the first goal of the match to take the lead.
