We NEED to stop appearance-based discrimination
The Stop the Stare campaign is uplifting the voices of those with visible differences. Shannon Macdonald-McLeod, 30, has a facial birthmark and is sharing her experiences of staring for Face Equality Week.
She lives in a small village, which attracts a lot of tourists each year. She says, "I have had mixed experiences with tourists visiting the village from outside the area, as they have often stood and stared at me when I've been at work. Sometimes I've smiled and tried to move on and do something else, but they have still watched my every move.
Changing Faces has worked with volunteer campaigners and ambassadors to come up with some top tips for ensuring that you don't – intentionally or not – stare at someone with a visible difference. Here are some of their recommendations: Diversify the media you consume to normalise seeing people who may look different from you. This removes the element of “surprise” when you do see someone with a visible difference, hopefully meaning you're less likely to accidentally stare at them.
