A store owner in Cedar Glen, California, was gunned down Friday by a man who made repeated disparaging remarks about an LGBTQ+ pride flag she displayed at her shop. CEDAR GLEN, California — A clothing store owner was shot and killed in front of her shop by a man who “made several disparaging remarks about a rainbow flag that stood outside the store,” sheriff’s officials said.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said Laura Ann Carleton, 66, was pronounced dead at Mag.Pi, the store she owned and operated in Cedar Glen, about 60 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. She was shot following a dispute over an LGBTQ+ pride flag she was displaying at the store, officials said.
The shooter, whose name has not been released by police, ran away from the store after the shooting Friday night. He later was found and killed in a confrontation with officers from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.Law enforcement agencies in several states have investigated the destruction of rainbow Pride flags as potential hate crimes in recent years.alongside “an unprecedented wave of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation in 2023,” according to the Human Rights Campaign.
