A storm system that developed over the Pacific Ocean in recent days was approaching the San Francisco Bay Area late Sunday afternoon. When will it start raining?

A storm system that developed over the Pacific Ocean in recent days was approaching the San Francisco Bay Area late Sunday afternoon and is expected to deliver the heaviest dose of rain the region has seen since early January overnight and into Monday, the National Weather Service said.

Winds kicked up this afternoon ahead of the storm and breezy conditions are expected into tomorrow. The North Bay is expected to see the first showers, and the system will gradually push southward with the rain reaching San Francisco around 6 p.m. tonight. "This might be the most, if not one of the most well-structured systems that we've seen over the winter," said Rick Canapa, a forecaster with the weather service."It's got a little bit of everything. It has tapped into a little bit of subtropical moisture. It has a fair amount of cold air behind it."

Most valley areas and locations along the coast and bay front are forecast to record 0.25 to 0.75 of an inch while higher terrain could see 0.50 to 1.5 inches. The heaviest rainfall is expected south of the Bay Area in the Santa Lucia Range along the Big Sur Coast, where up to 2 to 4 inches could fall.showing the system just off the coast of Northern California ."You'll also notice two flashes near the center of the circulation, which is lightning," the weather service said.
