Storm winds down as driving conditions improve along Seward Highway south of Anchorage, with 1-3 inches of snow in the forecast for parts of Southcentral this weekend:
A storm that brought over a foot of snow to Turnagain Pass and strong winds to the Seward Highway was winding down Friday.in the morning and would likely be over by Friday night, said meteorologist Joe Wegman with the National Weather Service office in Anchorage.
Conditions along the highway were improving due to above-freezing temperatures, though there were still wind gusts of 40 to 50 miles per hour through Portage, Wegman said. Since temperatures were in the mid- to upper 30s Friday, road conditions were expected to get better throughout the day as snow and ice along the road melted. However, conditions could remain slick near Turnagain Pass, which received 16 inches of snow and where temperatures were closest to freezing, he said.
After this storm, there’s still more precipitation expected this weekend: An additional 1 to 3 inches of snow could fall throughout Southcentral Alaska during the day Saturday, including in Anchorage, said Wegman.
