Tánaiste Micheál Martin wants an end to the 'cycle of instability, suspension and political torpor'.

Mr Martin said the return of the political institutions was "a necessary, and frankly, overdue step forward".Mr Martin was speaking in the the Dáil ."I have said consistently that there must be room for the Northern Ireland parties and the British and Irish governments to look together at the institutions to ensure that they work for the Northern Ireland of today," he said.

He offered his congratulations to Michelle O'Neill and Emma Little-Pengelly as they "take up the roles of First Minister and deputy First Minister, to Edwin Poots on assuming his role as Speaker, and to all the other members of the executive". Michelle O'Neill and Emma Little-Pengelly have been appointed first and deputy first ministers of the Northern Ireland Executive
