Marine scientists are buoyed to find two reefs off the Kimberley coast have escaped the brunt of excessive sea temperatures over summer, but are worried about what's around the corner.

Two reef systems off the Kimberley coast have escaped the worst of a predicted heat stress and bleaching event.Despite the reprieve, the reefs still show signs of recent damage and disease, which scientists will study for potential trends. The Ashmore and Scott reefs, north of Broome in Western Australia's Kimberley region, are closer to Indonesia than the mainland.

James Gilmour from the Australian Institute of Marine Science said warming waters could be detrimental to the health of a reef. Scott Reef had its first bleaching event in 1998 and had almost four successive years of heat stress to 2020."It's a pretty bad state of affairs, because we find ourselves wishing for storms and cyclones — not so bad that they cause damage, but just the temperatures," Dr Gilmour said.
