It has been a stormy week so far over outback Queensland, much of New South Wales and Victoria, bringing much welcome rain.

Storm threat rises for Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and Hobart over the next 48 hours as massive wet weather system hovers over Australia's south-east

Hot and stormy 30C weather arrived in Melbourne on Tuesday, making for the hottest Melbourne Cup day since 2005 – though the storms arrived too late to impact the big race. On Wednesday morning, lightning was firing away in the Queensland Maranoa and in central-west NSW as the clouds bubbled away. For Thursday, the weather system shifts east, leading to another big day of thunderstorm activity over a massive area – think anywhere east of a line drawn between Ballarat to Broome.Isolated severe storms may lead to flash flooding, hailstones larger than grapes and damaging winds during Thursday afternoon and evening.

The rising mercury and muggy air are a sign of more storms to come on Wednesday afternoon for the south-east. Picture: Sky News Australia
