The world famous Blackpool Illuminations had just eight lamps when they first started out 166 years ago
It's been quite the journey for Blackpool Illuminations, outlasting several generations and not to mention two world wars.
To save you from doing some pretty impressive mental maths, the illuminations were first introduced in 1879. Back then, they were a far cry from the multi-coloured spectacle we see today. However, one thing that late 1900s Blackpool appeared to have in common with 21st century Blackpool, was the need to lift the gloom on the promenade.Blackpool Council spent a significant amount of cash - some £5,000 - on an experiment to install electric street lighting.
The famous animated tableaux starting at the North Sea Shore were erected in 1932 and the illuminations now stretch from Starr Gate to red bank Road in Bispham, which is around six miles.
