The pub chain giant has 28 venues across Merseyside, each with their own unique décor and name - but the big question is how did each establishment get its name? A spokesperson for the pub chain said : “Wetherspoon has a historian who researches the area the pub is located in, the history of the pub and famous people and events in the area.

“He then selects five names – together with the reason for the name – this is forwarded to Tim Martin, founder of Wetherspoon and Tim, together with a group of people select the name. This means that most Wetherspoon pubs have individual names.”Navigator The Navigator takes its name from St Brendan the Navigator, who is said to have discovered America.

It stood empty until 1996 when the upper floors were converted into halls of residence and the ground floor became a public house which now has its original name.The Richard John Blackler This pub stands on the site of Blacklers department store, which was opened by Richard John Blacker in 1908. The store was destroyed in 1941 during the Blitz, with only the steel skeleton remaining.

The Welkin The Welkin takes its name from the Old English word for sky and commemorates Jeremiah Horrocks, one of Liverpool’s greatest sons and the Father of English Astronomy.The Captain Alexander This pub is named after Scottish-born sea captain Alexander Allen, whose family held a large North Atlantic fleet of sailing ships, which has offices in Glasgow, Liverpool and Montreal.
