The Indian government is trying to stop people watching a BBC programme which looks at the troubled relationship between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and India's Muslims.
abc.net.au/news/indian-students-detained-bbc-documentary-narendra-modi/101899416This week, as India celebrated its 74th Republic Day on January 26 — which commemorates the enactment of the constitution – the country's police were detaining students over screenings of a recent BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi which has been banned by the government.
The decision to prohibit the documentary has sparked worries about freedom of the press, yet it appears to have little effect on Modi's popularity and continued support in the wider community. The first episode of the documentary looks at the tensions between Narendra Modi and India's Muslim minority, investigating claims about his role in the 2002 riots that left more than 1,000 dead.
"We offered the Indian government a right to reply to the matters raised in the series — it declined to respond," the statement said. The students are being detained for organising and participating in protests against the Modi government's decision to ban the documentary.
